Butterfly Concert - An unfortunate incident

Oh ya, Butterfly concert's really a small and little concert compared to Inspire 07.
They showed a few interesting videos, and the concert is quite okay, and there's was a very zai hiphopper who wore red, i'm not sure his name, it's an Andersonian though..anyways..then there's very little pple who came, due to lack of publicity...frankly i didn't quite feel like coming, except that quite a lot of friends came (oh wahahaaa, herd effect XD) and then i was like okay, maybe it's boring so i will load some games in my GC then can play.

Then i left my GC in the bag, coz i was watching the concert and didnt play, but Bubbles was very fun (while on the bus i played..)

Guitar ensemble is not bad, some Jia Nan and Vincent playing...

VJC band is very nice, the conductor is super-animated XD

Indian Dance had a bit of hip hop in it, yea, exposure to all cultures is a good thing la ^^

and during intermission....
During intermission, then i saw another friend, (yea, Zhang Run :)) so told my group of friends that i'll be back after that, so i left my back where i sat and went to where my friend sat and we talked, and after 10 min suddenly lights were out, and i just feel like staying there, coz it's nearer too....

when it ended, i went back, and didnt see my bag...

Go borrow the DVDs on evolution from library, there are 4 of them, currently in possession of me and binsheng =P
Very good stuff for.. enrichment, and viewing pleasure (binsheng knows why)

"A very short introduction to molecules", forgot the author le =X
Its largely on biomolecules, sort of an extension of what we learn during the normal lectures..

"Human molecular biology", by Richard J. Epistien
Very good textbook, but only the front part, coz the later parts are too cheem. For those who want to know why we are learning all these chemical stuff in bio, there are links to a bit of pharmaceutical science and medical disorders.

For those who are mugging..

Organisation and control of eukaryotic genome is very complicated, and I haven't found a good book yet, so I can't recommend any. For now, just try to make the most out of the notes, I'll find a way to upload some bits and pieces of info to the yahoogroups.

Long weekend coming up, so cheer up! Use the time to pia all those work left behind...

strongly recommended for those who want to read up early (no point reading these last minute), coz it really really really reinforces ur concepts.

Lol. Suddenly feel like complaining abit

BOARDING SCHOOL FOOD SUCKS

And finally a glimmer of hope. They might be changing the caterer soon. YAY!!!!

This is crazy. Coming back to the boarding school after a 1 month stay at my aunts house. Suddenly feel the urge to go out to eat or cook my own meals, alas, we are only provided with a microwave oven, and a fridge that somehow makes your stuff dissapear overnight.

Somehow after some studying.. I feel that they should like.. include some lessons to enhance our learning like how our chemistry and biology syllabuses are related for STP enrichment, instead of talks that some of us dont even understand... Is like.. to know the properties of carbohydrates we should at least be taught the chemical properties of ketones and aldehydes... and also how ionic equilibrium (pKa and pKb) affects the ability of amino acids to be buffers...

Either way... good luck to everyone for blocks. Not much time left though.. I wonder will we be allowed to use the STP room to study.

Just feel like making a quick post xD
today went to school. Saw yuan chang and his CCA mates. There was something funny about this guy who needs an umbrella. It was raining you see. So funny thing was, it was a guy la ^^
To know details aask yuan chang to blog too la. But haha, even though im not too sure about what is going on i still find it very funny =P

Then went to esplanade. The food there was sugoooi!!! oiishii desu!!
haiya, dun think weelic got a windfall or something, it was a pre-u sem trip, and the people there were very nice, coz we made a video for them.

Ans for DNA on the yahoogroups!

Only did MCQ and structured coz lazy do essay yet.. and I havent really started studying, so I'll upload them later when I've finished...

Why do they always have to leave a tutorial unfinished before the tests and exams????

Haha.. have been down to NUS these days for centad. They're very strict on the lab safety, and I'm not allowed to touch anything coz I "have no training". In fact, is like almost impossible to do anything wrong, coz they are big yellow labels everywhere "NO GLOVES ON MOUSE OR KEYBOARD" "CENTRIFUGE MUST BE BALANCED" "NO GLOVES IN BIN" "USED SHARPS HERE" etc etc. And I calculated an average of 5 around "biohazard" labels per meter cube of lab space.

Its a wonder how Chao Tong can play in his lab. tsk tsk tsk. Naughty boy XD

i Haven't really said a lot about the place since I came back from NZ. Most of our time there we were at an outdoor pursuit centre, its situated next to Tongariro national park, so our lodgings were surrounded by forest. From the lodge we stayed in there were super nice views of the mountains.

Apparantly they're the LOTR mountains and our instructors were pointing out where this scene and that were filmed when we were there. I think i need to go watch the movie again :)

The weather changes there are quite sudden. One day there's clear weather, one day it rains, and one day its snows!

I haven't blogged in ages!
First off, hi yuan chang, bo wei, wee lic, cao lei! We miss you!
The term is going to end, and i am trying desperately to survive past friday before my cough/ flu erupts. Everytime i want to stay home and rest, i think of all the tutorials and lectures that i might miss and i decide against it:D
I have decided that i am going to study hard for blocks, but not too much. That is to say, i will not donate 100% of my effort to it. Maybe 60% Cos my logic is that if i put in all my effort now, then what do i have left for promos? But that said, i might regret it after i get my results back.
I'm starting my CIP this weekend! I'll be helping out in the A&E department at NUH, so it'll be quite an experience. I'm not sure that i am emotionally prepared enough, though. Still, if i want to be a doctor, this will be a good testing to see if i fit the job description.
I've got to attend a christian talk about what happens when the world ends, so toodles!

yay the blog is back up!!

anyway.. im really sorry, but i need to collect $7 from those who went for fac outing.. coz of the ties...

so far only woon chee, mark, zhi guang, esmond and jin xiang has paid me...

and i have 2 extra ties + 1 more for jin xiang who hasnt got his from me... but im not very sure who hasnt gotten theirs...

I know it can be quite sad when your results dont meet your expectations... but i guess whats done is done, no point worrying over the past, but we should channel our energies to the future. Sometimes... we just have to learn to channel the despair over results into a form of motivation... If you think you did badly this time, work harder next time! The good thing about not having a final examination is that you always get a second chance, and i guess we have no choice but to play the game of becoming educated. And now its still JC, and we have a year and a half left, where mistakes can still be covered up easily, at least before we enter uni (imagine if u punched a bus driver when u are working). Now is the chance to make mistakes, so that we can learn from them and prevent them from happening in the future. Don't be afraid of making wrong decisions now... at least is better to be wrong now than to be sorry later.

Personally I don't like the way academic results make everyone competitive. Academic results do not reflect your ability, but reflect how much you forget instead. True ability transcends academic results, and that is what the IP programme tries to teach us, but unfortunately it seems to be failing. How many people treated their student initiated activities seriously? Do we merely do copy and paste, or reflections with no meaning, or do we really take the opportunity to learn something outside our syllabus? Even now, do we bother to read up beyond the syllabus? The meritocratic system is intended to allow "perfect competition" spur people on to greater heights, but apparently, the thing called the "syllabus" is restricting what we learn.

Theres this thing that has been bugging me for a long time. Ideally speaking, there are many things we should and should not do, but practically speaking they are otherwise. How do we draw the line between being helpful and being taken advantage of? Or.. between helping and spoonfeeding? Or.. between hardwork and mugging? How do we differentiate between being unable to do something and unwilling to do something? What do we mean by "balanced"? I believe it all lies in the person, by setting your own definitions and standards. But, the problem only arises in the big picture, where actions get mistaken.

Last but not least... a question that has troubled many people. Basically, what are we living for? What are our directions in life? What is the purpose of life?

The academics give us callous replies to the meaning of life, and they are barely, or definitely not, answers to our purposes:

Biology: The central dogma. DNA encodes RNA, RNA codes for proteins, and the proteins determine the phenotype and characteristics of an organism. The mind, and all thinking processes are due to complex interactions between the neurotransmitters and proteins present in the neurons of our brains.

Chemistry: Life appears to be thermodynamically unfavourable, as the arrangement of molecules in a living system are highly ordered and non-spontaneous.

Physics: Life arises from probability. The uncertainty principle allows for random arrangement of molecules to form organic matter in the first place.

Mathematics: Not relevant.

Economics: Life is all about profit maximising (or about complex marketing strategies that we have not learnt)

Geography: Without cash, Malthus tells you, "take no brides". Malthus also says that people reproduce too fast (ie have too much fun).

History: World War I - 40 million died. World War II - 56 million died. Please do not repeat your mistakes (at least the world leaders should not). *Malthus must be happy

Perhaps with the exception of Literature. Morale of the story: enjoy the humanities. Studying too much deprives life of its essence.

Meritocratic systems are democratic and efficient, but they are huge engines of anxiety. The more purely meritocratic the system, the more open, the more efficient, the fairer, BUT, the more anxiety it produces, because there is no haven from competition. Your mother cannot go over and help you out - that would be cheating! You are on your own. Everything you do in a meritocratic society is some kind of test and there is never a final examination. There is only another test. People seem to pick up on this earlier and earlier in their lives and at some point it starts to get in the way of their becoming educated. Terms ending really really soon. can't you just feel the holiday inertia building up?? We've all worked super hard this term and its time for a well deserved break! Maybe not exactly a full four weeks of break, cos there's always things like SRP 2 wk attachment, CCAs, overseas trips, and blocks somewhere at the back of our mind :) I guess all four weeks won't all be filled with work and we'll still have time to slack off, and I appreciate that! haha

my bio grades on isp are DISMAL. 68% percentile compared to 92% percentile for the first test. i am so disappointed with myself. what a horrible way to end a term man. it doesnt help that chaotong reminded me how dismal my grades are. totally sucks man. i am so gonna die for blocks too, given the fact that i havent done maths tutorial for a term already. had fac comm interview today. kinda got killed i guess. i will treat you guys to tubs of island creamery ice cream if i get in man. i applied for sports rep only to realise that they traditionally prefer trackers and most of the time only take in trackers for this position. i hate term 2. its been a horrible term. congrats to zhiguang for getting moe pre-u scholarship. and congrats to myself for waiting and hoping that the school admin would call me too =(

Oii... since when did the class blog become my blog???

Everyone is busy. Econs lecture quiz tmr. PW to do. Research programmes of various sorts. Block tests. CCAs and competitions. Tests and tutorials.

One thing that I've learnt these days... is not to rely only on your own strength. A person's physical and mental strength is limited, and only by working with others, be it friends, family, or anyone else, can one fully utilise his or her potential.

In economics terms...

Scarcity (Stress) arises when the unlimited human wants cannot be satisfied by the limited abilities of the human mind and body. As such, a choice (priorities) has to be made, and opportunity costs have to be incurred (not being able to take up everything one likes). However, by trade (teamwork) one can overcome the problem by the speacialisation of resources (focus on your strengths).

Working alone is like a monopoly. A monopoly is a price setter (you set your own targets).
The marginal revenue (amount of extra work needed to do better) is always less than the average revenue (results). Hence, by the marginal approach, the firm (individual) should produce at MC = MR, where MC is rising. Now that the output (effort) has been determined, the monopolist will let the market demand set the price (get your results). Although a monopoly is prodictively efficient, it is always allocatively inefficient. This creates a deadweight loss (the empty feeling).

On the other hand, if everyone were to work together, the situation would tend towards perfect competition. By being a price taker (everyone sets the same target), the resultant is both productively and allocatively efficient. By shifting from a monopoly to a perfect competition, consumer surplus (everyone's satisfaction) is greatly increased, although producer surplus (personal satisfaction) may or may not increase. There is also no longer a deadweight loss.

Furthermore, by working together, the market (class) as a whole can experience substantial economies of scale (common benefits). This is due to the class being a large firm. This internal EoS usually takes the form of technical EoS (greater scope for specialisation).

Sounds crappy, and this should NOT be used as a studying material.

But basically... its quite saddening to see the disparity in many things, not just results. There are people who just can't do well or get what they want despite the amount of effort they put in, and there are people who just have to devote every bit of their time and stressing themselves out. And there are also people who are still free and easy (how lucky..).

Either way, do study hard, not just alone, but do to ask and clarify your doubts as well. And do take care of ur health.

WHEEEE

After dunno how many weeks of training..... And my 1st time competing for a sports CCA....

Got 4th for white belt team, and 1st for white belt pairs!!!!!

Overall... our school was not bad... we managed to maintain our 2 golds (white and yellow belt pairs), and quite a number of runners ups (white belt team male, yellow belt pairs, yellow belt team female, and got some more i cant remember..)..but basically, almost everyone got into the finals, so overall we still got many awards... however..TJC was like... somewhere around 10 golds...... =(

I suddenly realised after this while of hectic training... i'm quite far back in my studies... thts why some times i cant answer ur questions... sorry for that... and these few days i realised i was quite dao, mainly coz of tiredness but also working stress. Apparently i came to jc looking for stress and i think i've found it. Anyway... competitions over!!!! so now i have my time back.. haha... thanks to all those who supported us in one way or another...

I didnt realise it was week 9 until shuliang reminded me abt STP. 2 more weeks, and it will be holidays. I'm staying back for the whole hols, coz of centad.... so sad i cant go home.... and after that will be our blocks.

Somehow, I feel that it will be good if we can meet occasionally during the holidays to study together. I seriously think that there are a lot of things lacking in lectures, and sometimes we dont have enough time during tutorials.

Also... i'm really sorry for getting ties of the wrong colour, ugly design, and at a very costly price too... i know $7 can really hurt wallets.... esp if u add the $17 for the tickets... really sorry if i made a stupid decision.. perhaps we should just have done without it... and now i have 3-4 extra ties with me... coz didnt manage to give some people....

really sorry for the ties.... anyway... do remember to do ur GPP, and jiayou for blocks.

oh no.... everyone is starting to fall sick.....

do take care.... rest well, and dont overwork yourself.... make sure u get enough sleep, and dont stinge on food... and drink lots of water!!! and prioritise ur time... dont get overcommitted!!

if u really have problems with studies can find me... my breaks are free, so i'll rather do something productive than stone at class bench or some place....

i agree that life is starting to get more and more stressful... and the depth and rigour of our academic subjects have increased alot... and also CCAs and PW and SL projects and SRP or Centad etc.... everything is getting busier.

yo..hihi..i have not been blogging for the past few months already, so long never use this blog liao..

hey, i have a very important announcement to make here, after 4 months of slacking, i finally have my own ccas, take note i did not write cca but ccas. Yes, that's right, i have 2 CCA, i am currently in Centad as well as photography society. What a big achievement for me.. haha, i am no longer CCAless, yay.

anyway, i have been very unhappy and upset about the stupid ASEAN night for the past few weeks. In case some of you don't know what is that, it is basically, according to those bunch of brainless, idiotic and moronic organizer (i think even Glenn is even smarter than them, haha), an event organized yearly for all the ASEAN scholar studying in Singapore to come together to have SOME FUN. Basically, it is like some sort of orientation for us to meet and make friends with other people (wow, what a noble aim).Personally, i can't see any benefit from this stupid events, so what if we go there and meet those new friends, its not like we can see each other frequently, whats the point of knowing those people that we may only met once in our lifetime, its not like we can always see each other and stay contact with them lar, we will soon forget each other, so whats the point of wasting our time and most importantly money ($8.50) to go and do this stupid activity. What makes me more angry is that this event fall on the same day as our faculty outing, luckily for me as i can use fac outing as an excuse not to go for the ASEAN night, but guess what, they are asking those who cant go to pay money, not $1, not $2, but $6.50, thats is so ridiculous, and those we cant go will not get any single things, not even food or some sort of orientation shirt, my precious $6.50 will just go to waste. Do you know the power of $6.50, it can allow me to eat lunch in school for 3 days, it is enough for me to wash cloths in boarding school (including drying) for 3 times, it is enough for me to buy 13 cups of drinks, and it is enough for me to do something more meaningful. i m not saying that those we cant go for the ASEAN night should not pay a single cent, $1 or $2 is reasonable, but $6.50 is imply ridiculous, its so unfair to those that cant go for the outing. this entire stupid things is making me very angry and bu shuang, but as all of u know, i am a very nice person, so i will still pay my $6.50, i will treat this as a donation to a BEGGER, i am HELPING those who are LESS FORTUNATE, at least this will make me not so angry.

okay, enough of complaining, i am going to do my work already. not mugging though. sianz, we still have a lot of tests for the next few weeks. GP test, Chem and bio Spa, econs quiz...haiz cannot relax yet

4(a)(i) Limiting factor: Light intensity

4(a)(ii) Light is saturated and is no longer a limiting factor. Other factors such as CO2 concentration and temperature becomes the limiting factor.

4(a)(iii) Light is usually present in excess in nature, hence rate of photosynthesis is limited by other factors such as concentration of CO2 and temperature, hence any change in CO2 concentration or temperature will directly affect the rate of photosynthesis. Any small variation in light intensity can thus be said to have no effect on the rate of photosynthesis.

4(b) Photosynthesis is largely enzyme controlled, hence rate of photosynthesis is proportional to rate of enzyme action. At low light intensities the light intensity is limiting, hence rate of photosynthesis is affected primarily by light intensity and not temperature. A temperature of 25C is closer to the optimum temperature of the enzymes involved in photosynthesis than 15C. The substrate particles have more kinetic energy, leading to an increase in enzymatic activity.

4(c) Carbon dioxide is a limiting factor of photosynthesis in nature. From Fig 1, Graph A shows that the rate of photostynthesis can be increased up to 12 au in 0.4% CO2, whereas for graph C the maximum rate of photosynthesis is only at 2 au. This shows that the rate of photosynthesis can be increased up till CO2 concentrations of 0.4%, which is much higher than the atmospheric concentration of 0.035%.

4(d) - Amount of water - water is required for photolysis, generating protons and electrons for the synthesis of ATP and NADPH required by the light independent stages.
- Concentration of oxygen - oxygen is a competitive inhibitor of RuBisCO, an enzyme crucial for carbon fixation in the light independant stage / Calvin cycle. Oxygen competes with CO2 for the active site of RuBisCO, reducing the rate of photosynthesis.
- Presence of poisons/enzyme inhibitors - Poisons may affect the ETC by serving as electron acceptors, inhibiting the production of NADPH.
- Deficiency of essential ions required for chlorophyll - Unable to harvest light, reducing rate of photolysis, hence reducing rate of photosynthesis.
- Presence of pollutants - may damage leaves, ie blocking stomata or reducing transparency of epidermis, hence reducing rate of photosynthesis.

4(e) Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) and reduced Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Phosphate (NADPH)

- ATP and NADPH produced used to link and drive the Calvin cycle
- In the stroma, 3 molecules of Ribulose bisphosphate (RuBP) and 3 molecules of CO2, catalysed by RuBP carboxylase oxygenase (RuBisCO) to produce an unstable 6 carbon intermediate that spontaneously breaks down to form 6 molecules of Glycerate-3-phosphate (GP)
- GP is phosphorylated by ATP to form Glycerate-1,3-bisphosphate (BPG), producing ADP
- BPG is reduced by NADPH to form Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P), producing NADP+ and an inorganic phosphate group
- ADP, NADP+ and the inorganic phosphate group are recycled in the light dependant stage
- 1 molecule of G3Pexits the cycle and is used to store chemical energy in the form of carbohydrates such as glucose or fructose, or for the synthesis of lipids, amino acids, and nucleic acids.
- The remaining 5 molecules of G3P are used to regenerate the 3 molecules of RuBP for the cycle.

I find my life to be very weird...lately....
How should i say? it's not productive? it doesn't really matter. no "life"? we just had a mini b'day celebration ( mini, tt's an overstatement... :( ) and I played pool afterwards. So what's wrong? actually, if i know, i won't be writing this post.

I wonder how many of u reading this will be having the same syndromes: just having nothing to do in the entire long weekend, but it's still passing by with the swiftness of light. You can't freeze time, and you feel unfulfilled about just letting time simply pass by. You have none of the energy you used to have, the energy to do something meaningful, to love life. You lose your quirkiness(quirkiness in a positive sense) and your hyperness and initiative to get things the way u'll like it, instead, u settle down and stone, u won't even be shaken up by a stream of advice.

You know it when you are stuck. In the bottom of a murky river. Stagnant.

I don't know about you. To me, Emoness=emotional-ness is such an abstract term (to others, it's a jargon.ahaha,..but i derive no joy from typing out the onomatopoeia for laughter). Like beauty. Like Evil. It's different to different people. Everyone have different paradigms. (I hope the same education system would not make people homogenous, but only time will tell.Anyway as i observe people have slightly different paradigms about emoness.)

So what about this emoness?

It's my time to contribute what i have been suffering from these days. I will not say suffer. It's an overestimation. Coz...i'm not getting the degree of sadness as compared to e long-term stressed out individuals in our class; and if u have been keeping with the news, u may know who i think i know who is suffering from you-know-what. Ok, a lot of uncertainty here. Let me just keep it that way.

On to my feelings lately. It's a pretty long weekend. It's Labour day. and i'm turning 17 tomorrow. Not too bad, u know, coz i have just lived that 1 year longer, and i'm proud of it, to have simply "survived". I sort of think e survivor-of-the-fittest theory will be very cruel and all that, but it also teaches us to live every moment with a kind of knowing. Know that to simply treasure every second is a fortune. Know that we may not live the next second. Know that we may make an impact (preferably good one) on others and the world the next second.

There's a lot to do in a second.
I changed my mindset,my paradigm, at a certain second while typing this post.
And, geez, i dun have a recollection of when exactly i started to think differently.
In which of the numerous 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium-133 atom at zero kelvins have i gotten thru with my thinking?

For all the people out there who are feeling stressed, feeling life su**, feeling that u want to change your msn nick from something positive like "DOING CIP with BLAHBLAHBLAH life rox" to something negative...
here's something to try. Just try blogging about your bad moods. (in my case, bad mood is an overstatement, really, just a bit of hormones...)
See whether you will suddenly just make a U-turn about things.

Just a sharing here... on "How to dunk a doughnut" by Len Fisher.

It covers on quite a lot of interesting stuff that can enhance what we learn, such as applying diffusion processes to dunking doughnuts and cooking meat, protein denaturation in boiling eggs, as well as behaviour of phospholipids in soap, etc. For the more interested readers, theres a chapter on the Physics of Sex, with stuff like the effect of viscuous drag(i dont understand that) on the flagellum of sperm cells, as well as the applications of Newton's Laws in er herm u know what, complete with calculations.

Reading books are a good way to destress!! Esp when u start to find that the stuff u are mugging is just pure memory work. Learn to apply them in practical ways (applications of Newton's Law will have to wait till later XD).

why is it that only shu liang seems high these days...

honestly, our class is very sien... everyone is very busy, and esp term 2, where everyone gets spammed by competitions... so.. good luck to all those involved!! and not to mention the upcoming tests... chem on 2nd, bio on 7th. my bio notes on cell structure part I are with kai xian now... those who are lazy to read the 50 page notes can get the 16 page version from him and photocopy... please treat them with care.. took me 3 days to make them.. lol

actually, for bio i seriously think the best way to study is to make ur own notes, and i mean notes, not plain copying. try to summarise the notes as much as possible, and in the meantime try to fully understand them. then... after some time, the stuff that you are familiar enough can be left out, so your notes get lesser and lesser over time, and this greatly reduces the effort required if u need to study that topic again..

honestly speaking, i am very happy for those who decided to make their own notes instead of using mine. as the old saying goes... give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man how to fish and he can feed himself forever. jiayou for your efforts!! and don't just make notes for the sake of tests or exams, make them a part of your learning!! and i also realised, not everyone has the same learning style, so by making your own notes you can benefit fully from them. keep up the good work!! =)

but seriously, dont be afraid to ask questions, especially if u really dont understand something. better correct the mistake now than to learn the wrong things. and seriously, dont be afraid to hold me back if u need help.... im more than happy to help out... dont force urself to study alone if u really cant understand or have problems understanding....

i want to apologize to some people in our class.... especially if i have daoed u these days... sometimes im just tired and stressed, and i dont mean any offense at all...

sianz... i guess everyone's schedule is being fully occupied by now... so many of us end school at sunset, and by the time we get home its dark. then at night still need to study, do vbc, study, study, study, and these days i end so late i have no dinner to eat in boarding school (doesnt really matter, since the food sucks), so im surviving on instant noodles for dinner.

im being so random~... this is the 4th consecutive day of 1am sleep -> 6am wake up. i seriously wonder how to remember all the biological processes and intermediates. i just hate memorising without knowing the concept behind, and its just plain funny why do u have to turn the glucose into so many funny stuff before u can make atp. and worse still.... its just the transfer of phosphate groups from one substance to another, and this makes glucose seem like an intermediate itself. photosynthesis is no different. PS II -> plastoquinone -> cytochrome complex -> plastocyanin -> PS I -> ferredoxin.

actually these just makes me marvel at life itself. although they seem to be just molecules arranged in an orderly fashion, the efficiency of the system is just plain amazing. every molecule is fully utilised, such that no energy is wasted. and why do molecules seek to reproduce themselves in a similar fashion, via mitosis, meiosis, or reproduction. is there something to this mystery? lol.. should leave this to the KI people.

really sad for kai xian... the feeling of playing against an ex-teammate is quite hard to swallow. especially if they run away with the trainings. that is plain horrible.. knowing how your entire team plays, and they already have the 知彼知己 advantage. still...... treat this as a learning opportunity.... theres 1 more year left. jiayou and train hard!! dont give up!! transform your weaknesses into your strengths, and use this as a source of motivation. aim high, and especially since u are at a disadvantaged position, all the more put in your fullest effort!! do us proud next year!! HWACHONG JIAYOU!! believe in yourself, and your team, and believe that you all can do it as a team!!

congrats to helen and kelvin and everyone from MAD for gold with hons!! one of my friends said that it was so good that he cried. personally i have only cried to movies or music, seldom books since i dont read fiction, but this is the first time i hear someone who can cry to a dance. thats simply amazing!!!

mrs cheng is still on mc..... get well soon!!! we all miss bio lessons. and monday was like 3 hours of break followed by 4 hours of lessons.... haiz.. wednesdays prac was just like exam conditions...

i really hope our class can integrate well with each other.... some people are just left out. just because some people are more introverted that others doesnt mean that we shouldnt take the initiative to make them feel appreciated. and in the process... the sad fact is that our life is still largely result oriented, and especially for some people who are slow learners... plus the rather inefficient way of lecturing... so the result is endless time spent on self studying. some people place more value on studies than others, but it doesnt really matter. what really matters is the value of the person itself, not what the person does.

in fact, i dont remember us having a photo with all 24 people inside it.

and not one outing with all 24 ppl.

it may seem hard, but these 2 years (or 1 year 8 months 1 week left) shouldnt just be wasted like that. treasure all the time you have. it is time well spent that buys happiness, not money (wrote that for gp.. lols).

hey everyone,

hwachong squash lost the semis. we can only settle for 3rd place now. we have been defeated quite a couple of times coz my batch n my senior batch, both only managed to clinch the much coveted championships when we were sec 2, the two consecutive c div golds that we got. but after those two glorious years, neither batch has seen a gold. and yet again, a gold has eluded us. all of us will most probably graduate without being able to see another gold again. sigh. how much we desire to lift that challenge trophy after for so many years.
today totally sucked. we got a horrible line up. i felt terrible when the line up came up coz i was partly responsible for picking that line up. when we lost the last match, it was by a narrow margin. we only lost to rj by 1 player, 2-3. almost every girl in the team was in tears, my seniors disappeared to emo, we had to start conducting searches for our own teammates to console them.
sigh. it was terrible. despite so many years of defeat at the finals, i have never seen so many people emo at once. and it didnt help at all that rjc won coz of the dsa people. 3 of their players won us while we won 2 of their players. the two that we won were ex-ri people. from the 3, one dsa-ed from acsi while the other two, was sadly ex-hci. my ex-teammates. people who i had trained with, through thick and thin, and after 4 years of investment by my coach, these two b**tards dsa-ed to rj.
i admit i am pissed off with them and i am not only talking terms with both of them now. my best friend in the team was totally upset after he lost the deciding match to our ex-teammate. i am starting to wonder how it feels to dsa to another school and play for them, beating your ex-team especially when you are instrumental to their defeat. i am not trying to assume some moral high ground here. i have no right to decide whether what they did was right or wrong. in fact, i dont believe that there is a right or wrong. but i simply wonder, how is it like to beat the people you trained with for 4 years juz for people you barely know after 4 months. if those two felt great after beating us, i rather not have such people in the team. but if they had any conscience left, they would at least be guilty inside. how could they do this to a school and a team which has contributed so much to their development in secondary school.
i admit. i am bitter about our defeat. but that is simply becoz i keep imaging how perfect things would be if they hadnt changed schools. those days and memories we had together as a team no longer matter now. i just have no idea how i am gonna face them next year when i play for the team. and its sad to already confirm our defeat to rj next year. its totally impossible to defeat them when our team is so weak. this year was our last chance. and we blew it. sigh =(

i visited my best friend's livejournal today. she was v emo, and v tired, and as i read her entry my heart went out to her. she is a great person, the most altruistic soul i have ever encountered, and i feel thankful to have her as a friend. she doesnt deserve being ill treated, doesnt deserve being taken advantage of, doesnt deserve to be so exhausted and helpless. my friend is in a bad state, and my heart feels heavy too.

i have to admit that jc is a weird time. i dun think it is a natural awkwardness that everyone feels during the transition from acny teen to adulthood, i dunno whats wrong with me too, i never tried harder but what i get in return are so meagre. oh well. studies. relationships. hahaz. what can i say? life feels esp bumpy nowadays. i m overwhelmed with fatigue and feel so aged, feeling that hollow of fear in my stomach that has become so familiar. i dun expect u to notice, to perceive my insecurity behind that incandescent smile, to see that shadow of uncertainty hovering around the edges of my smile.

to see that maybe sometimes i smile because i dun want people to see how pensive my eyes actually are.

sometimes i wonder too what i m living 4. why i bother 2 try. why i try to do e best i can since i dont believe in reincarnation or retribution anyway. close ur eyes, and its all over. e temptation is there, i admit. i m emo cos i feel inadequate. that i m becoming increasingly further from what i want in life with every step i take, stranded in e midst of a pool of murk. who can i turn to, seriously? do i even bother? i m so tired, i dozed off while holding e 10kg rifle in shooting.

i told my friend that just this once, i cant say anything to comfort u, because like u, i m hoping that things will take a better path. because i deserve it for trying, and she deserves it for for being such a good person.

i told her not to worry, whilst i m desperately trying to believe myself too.

hey everyone, (disclaimer: long post)

i am suddenly inspired to post because i juz finished reading our senior class blog. the two latest post there basically debunks and discusses the issues and reasons why hc is facing a lack of school spirit.
since i was in high school, this problem has been rather evident. for example, the high school would cheer our guts out for our athletes during any competition. my personal experiences had been at the track and field finals and the squash finals. last year, the b div finals was simply remarkable. one of our players was facing a national team player and it was with certainty that our player would face defeat. however, the immense cheering during the 3rd set of that match allowed my teammate to win the acs player and go on to the 4th set too although he lost the 5th. but the important thing was i saw the power of cheering. it was intimidating that day. our hci supporters were on their feet cheering for every shot that the ac guy screwed up and for every shot that my senior won the point. despite being a national player, that guy stumbled. on the other hand, sitting right next to us were the ac supporters who looked at us as if we were freaks coz they were sitting down as usual, posing like they always do. only their prefects cheered the heart out for their team. it lead me to feel how incredible hci is. even though the supporters didnt even know the name of the player in the court, they juz cheered like crazy for him simply because he was part of our hwachong family.
the previous blog post in our senior's blog mentioned that "Hwa Chong Institution" is simply "incorporating The Chinese High School and Hwa Chong Junior College". "mere incorporation, not integration." it was also cited in the post that some of the main reasons of this problem was due to the excessive red tape in hci college as compared to hci high school. having studied and studying in both systems, i have to concede that the high school has a superior system as compared to the college coz the administration there is much more open and receptive to ideas from our own students. although i have only studied in the college for around 4 months, the amount of red tape and the obligation to always do what is politically correct so that the higher ups will not frown upon our actions, is immense. this, i feel, has greatly impeded the development of real talent and capabilities in the college. for example, i chose not to run for council simple because of the terrible load of obligations and rules i have to observe as a councillor of the college council. it has nothing to do with sai kang or not. seriously. the amount of sai kang i did in high school is nothing you guys can imagine as i was at the bottom of the hierarchy for 3 years as compared to more capable councillors like yuanchang and zhiguang . but at least i didnt feel stifled or restrained. at least the sai kang didnt felt meaningless. even during the council elections, candidates had to be briefed on what they can say and what they cannot say. this is so stupid. the whole event then becomes a well orchestrated drama instead. this is the main reason why people feel the elections are rigged. simply because of the interference and influence the administration has and not the integrity of elections committee.
however, i feel that the merger is not without its advantages. the main advantages is that i am still in hwachong, the school which i so dearly love, the school which i am greatly indebted too. i also get to study in the same institution with all my friends for at least the next two years before we all take on our separate paths. i am thankful to ip too for the amount of time it freed up for students like me who simply cannot thrive or live in a system which is obsessed with preparation for a single exam. it has given me research work, sabbaticals, council, classmates, cca, exchange programmes, attachment programmes, internships, field trips, service learning projects. how am i suppose to repay this programme in a manner most fitting? by becoming the best product of this process =)

Well, Sam is going to US colorado....wish he have fun during his skiing holiday...meanwhile we'll need to work on chem tutorial sessions on our own...haix, why like that? now dunno what to do...test so near....on my b'day somemore...but haha this is very random...
he can "repay" us later by buying the whole class presents! =) Anyway, just wish him a safe trip...and do remember the following tips when flying

1. Wear slippers to the airport.
2. Don't bring so much liquid detergent/soap/weird fluid things.
3. No need to bring too much water on board, ask the flight attendants.
4. Prepare for jet lag on long flights across timezones, mentally.
5. Bon voyage!! Have a happy holiday, don't think about students...
6. But remember to buy them presents before leaving for Singapore.

Since I am bored and don't feel like doing homework, I shall write a short post about my personal life. Don't worry, no long-winded essays here.

I was out the whole day today, kayaking for my one-star kayaking cert. Had to do it because I missed half a day of the course I took during YLTC (OAC camp), though I received the cert by mistake, maybe someone helped me tick my name against the attendance =/. Anyway, I got darker, hopefully darker than jinx after all his tennis, and sunburnt, yep, and I got two certs!

Yesterday was YL nite, (OAC again) spent the whole day preparing and organising for it, quite hectic. Definitely one of the funnest moments of my life, everyone getting together senior and junior while we roll out our well planned programme, wee.

Okay short and sweet. By the way MRS CHENG if you read this, I'm really sorry for bugging you on friday, wasn't thinking clearly, kinda just freaked out when I realised the timing... However, I do feel that the school should know that students have quite packed schedules and that changing the timing of an event they signed up for should come with a revision of who's going or not. It's quite sad that I couldn't go with you guys too.

hey everyone

had great fun yesterday even though a terrible headache plagued me the entire day. woke up around an hour ago. went to sleep 12 hours ago. haha. went home ytd, bathed, and slept all the way through till this morning. at least my headache is gone now. got a terrible neckache though. X)
after yesterday, i felt really privileged to be in Hwa Chong and the smartest thing i did in my entire life was not going to ri even though my dad wanted me to. i feel really lucky coz not many schools are as well off as us, thus they dont have stuff like research labs. many people dont see the research labs unless they go out for attachments to places like imcb or nus, while i have been exposed to it since sec 2. hence i get pretty irritated by people who take our school for granted. they dont see the amount of effort the school puts into nurturing students like us. the worst type of people are those who are in the integrated programme but decided to dsa to other jc. its a terrible waste of resources on these people especially when the school pays so much to ensure that our ip remains the best and the most successful. ingrates.
also, the school is willing to arrange and sponsor meaningful trips like the one we just had ytd at kkh. i seriously felt that the 2 hours there was very productive and not only did i learn a lot of new things, but i also learnt stuff which we will never learn in school like how a sperm bank works and the general nature of work of embryologists.

Whee!!! Class outing was so fun!!! and enriching!!!! I mean how often do you get a chance to go down and watch an omni-theatre movie as a class? And visit a sperm bank! haha dun u think its interesting! too bad chaotong, kelvin, helen, alycia, cao lei, shuliang couldn't join us!

Haha kind of agree with Kai Xian that our class is very special. We dun have specific cliques but just bonds together v well as a class :). 7E is a special class, and I really think I am lucky to spend my last 2 years in JC with yall!

Must really thank Mr Koh for not including Mathematics during the STP selection test, otherwise I am quite sure I would prob be in some other random class :p!

Anyway I managed to get hold of a photo of us during the research symposium. Although its not really a class photo, but I think i'll just post it up la. Quite sad that the bowei, peggy, bixuan, helen, kelvin and cao lei weren;t there with us.

We went to the science centre today, and honestly The Human Body was quite nice. Only i got dizzy during the show. It was fun to watch the show with little kids, because then you had license to be childish... Kai xian, don't YOU agree?(: Except now i have decided that i will not be a primary school teacher... I can manage a handful of kids, but 40 is seriously overkill.
I've learnt alot about people, in these three months in JC. We humans are complex creatures, don't you think? You can never ever know enough of them, because they come in so many different kinds. I wish I could love them all, and I will try, but sometimes my soul feels harrowed by certain people. Yet I know that deep inside them is something to be admired, to be loved, to be trusted, and I want to find that gem inside them. I hope i have the patience to do so.
I think our class rocks. There are so many different people, and sure, we have our little circles of friends. But those circles of friends are fluid... We can shift around, and mingle and mix. We aren't hydrophobic and hydrophilic. And I really feel inspired to work hard. Not pressured, though. Our class is that happy equilibrium between mugness and slackness, with each of us taking turns to diffuse across from time to time, thus maintaining the equilibrium:D i think i used the terms wrongly, but doesn't it create such pretty imagery? Imagine all of us little molecule things, floating around...

Hi everyone!!!

Havent posted for a really long time... my room was upgrading the internet connection so it was down for a few days....

Life these few days: work work work. To quote Chao Tong: "Got some people whole day just mug and mug, these type of ppl arh, no life one, can just die off lo". Haha jk.... but seriously, my life is super sien... everyday is like playing back a recording...... sleep eat study sleep.......

Ok la.. JC life still has fun parts, like the DARLING molecular model set (why is it named like that?). Had a horrible failure trying to make a glucose molecule haha...

But then, our class response is quite cold for many things leh.... The choir concert only 3 ppl going.... And who wants to go for OCIP Africa.. its very nice lo... 2 weeks in Zambia, which is quite good... theres proper food and accomodation and can even use internet connection in cyber cafes... pls dun despise Africa ok? And I seriously think the experience is worthwhile... as the work we do will mainly be in the schools, and due to the high birth rate of around 7-8 per family, there will be many many little kids around. Leave your bed of roses, cross the boundaries, and make a difference. And the price is not that bad, around $2500, and they are trying to find external sponsors to subsidise the price..

Anyway, good luck to Esmond for tramp competition... and to everyone taking Econs for the lecture quiz tmr.. jiayou!!!! And I feel so bad, pon so many taekwondo sessions then today just zham and got selected for competition.. ^^

Stupid maths tutorial.... wasting all my foolscap... and its dam lame lo... everything press graphic calculator and write down... zzz..... and it took me 2 hours plus to do 3C and 4, havent finish some more... have to draw sooooo many graphs.... zzzzzz....

I really hope we can go through cytology some time soon... the lecture notes is just scary. And the font size is so big, the notes are like.. 100+ pages.

Have been slacking for the past few weeks.... pia-ing tutorials now.... maths, chem, bio, PI, GP, so much for a long weekend...

Taekwondo grading tomorrow!!! I really hope to get a double promotion... then can get coloured belt, or else will still be stuck with a white belt with some yellow sticker. Feels so noobish..

Don't know what to say. 忍着气。Or else I will go 爆。

Being a nice person has its payoffs. Esp when you really want to help someone and they just give up. Then you suddenly regret the time and effort spent but you know you shouldn't be regretting coz you did it out of your own will coz you just felt like helping in the first place.

Argh Chem O is pressurising me. How many Pa or atm I don't know. I start talking in chemical language. NO!!!! nitrogen monoxide!!! At least I know theres no point for me mugging too hard since I can't participate in international olympiads.

Council elections AND Chem O on Tuesday. At last I can get some rest.... then have to start working again... got PW and SPA. And have to train like siao, coz I don't want to fail NAPFA (at least 2.4) for the 5th consecutive year.

As for the blog, I think shouldn't show photo, coz the space we have for blogging is quite small... I *can* do some coding, but I haven't touched them for a few years and I almost forgot everything by now..... And there seems to be some bug that screws up the font.

Basically thats all for now.... not in the mood to do anything. I feel like just stoning. Anyways, jiayou again to Mark and Peggy. VOTE FOR THEM!!!!! And also good luck to all those going for chem O, and those with other competitions as well.... Take care, and remember safety 1st. omgomgogmogmogmgomg. stj today was super fun. i juz loved the venue. marche was damn good except that its abit overcrowded and the people kept chasing us off and looking at us coz we were making so much noise! haha. S7E IS IN THE HOUSE. X)

kinda disappointed huiqi, tunglin, mark, binsheng, woonchee, bixuan werent able to turn up coz it was seriously seriously DAMN FREAKING FUN!!!

ok. crap. haha. been damn high for the past two weeks. i think i left a pretty bad impression on some of the seniors today. lol. coz i got asked a couple of times if i was gay or not...lol...apparently not many people know that i got a girlfriend then. XD. erm. too bad to junjie and jinxiang who tried to get me un-high. yeah...they had to keep harping on the fact that i got into ocip with my FAVOURITE teacher and that i am now the FAVOURITE gp rep too =( and that i was high coz i grew 1cm -.-
haha. although i am not interested in chem olympiad, i hope whoever who wants to get in gets in! lol...yunsong and kianhong was telling how the first selection test is pretty easy to pass but when the selection test for the final 10 is super hard. yup. so jiayou!
oh man. i am juz happy today coz we spent time together as a class! haha. many people dont believe this, but i really enjoy having an outing with you guys. like seriously. its juz damn fun =)
oh well...gonna sleep now. its nearly 2 am. lol...hope the seniors will post the pics asap coz i didnt take many pics today [so shibai...]

Hi all!!! Just came back from STJ.. haha

Quite sad some ppl can't join us... We should make sure no one is left out for the next outing!!

As for SRP, there is only one foreigner (Qian Zong Jin). He's imba, so lets not mention that. And I can't blame anything for not getting in, coz I left almost everything blank. Q: "Why do you want to join SRP?" A: "Not sure.". I can't believe I actually wrote that.

Bio presentations due on Monday.... Just in case anyone forgot....

Chem O selection on Tuesday... Jiayou to all those who are going... Although 6H and 6K are imba we must not lose to them!! Must achieve equilibrium!! =X

And not to forget PW. Project Wonderful. I have no idea on what to do yet. argh.

hihi...binsheng is here to tell you a good news..the one on only 07S7E class t shirt design is out..but due to technical difficulties, i was unable to post it on the blog..but don't worry, i will print it out on monday and bring to school to let everybody see...seriously i think that the class shirt looks quite cool (in my "humble" opinion)...haha :o)

anyway...school life has been very hectic for the past 2 weeks (probably not for me coz i am still quite free everyday)..hope that everyone is coping well

next tuesday will be the selection test for chem o, i think i will go there and take the test for fun bah...anyway..i don't think that i will have any single chance of getting in...imba ppl from 6h and 6k will surely own us one lar...haha

SRP is so unfair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not even a single foreigner (non PR obviously) get into SRP, then they still gave us chance to go and take the test, give us false hope, SO STUPID!!!!!!!! if they don't want to choose any foreigner, they should sate very clearly that this program is exclusively for singaporean and pr...waste my time go and take the stupid test....once again..SO STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

enough of complaining, next wednesday is also the centad briefing...pathetic ppl like me will definitely go and give it a try to see if i will have any last chance of getting a project this year (stupid SRP!!!!!!)....lets HOPE that i can get into centad SUCCESSFULLY....

This is kinda crappy. You know your life is screwed when you have slept less than 10 hours over 4 days 3 nights. Plus taekwondo training and swimming lesson today. I feel as if im testing the limits of the human body.
